Building a Network

Advice to anybody installing a pici-server or pici-proxy:
Contrary to what is said in the installation instructions, do NOT install any tags, banners etc on your site, pointing to either your own pici-server/proxy or to the main picidae.net site. Also, do not install the pici favicon. This would increase the chance of being blocked. I can imagine that all sites somehow linking to picidae.net or displaying the picidae icons/tags/banners will be considered suspicious and are more likely to be IP blocked.

Furthermore, when linking to your own pici-server/proxy you publicly announce that you have an OPEN PROXY SERVER running! This is not what you want to do because it can and will be used soon by myriads of people, increasing the load on the server (which may lead to being blocked by your own provider) and probably connecting your IP address to some internet activity you did not intend.

Be careful, picidae can only work as a small, word-by-mouth network. Any public announcement on a web page will lead to blocking or other unwanted effects.

(As a paranoid afterthought: When announcing new servers by email, you better use encrypted email.)

Actually, the term "picidae" is a weapon as such.

With a sufficient number of hits on the search engines, the censors' blacklists are bound to become a problem for allowing the other authorized traffic to pass.

I will enjoy leaving the "bad p-word" as part of my signature on many websites - spam the censors!

The Chinese Censorship Dictionary turns censorship on it's head. Learn the words they're hiding and share information on why.

Thank You! Very nice project!
But from my point of view the key to success is that many people run picidae-servers. Otherwise the chinese government can block all of them immediately.
And this will only happen, if it becomes possible to run servers on linux or even windows...

Thanx zuma, you'r right. The network is the key to success. So is the community behind the project. We are working on the proposed linux version. And everybody is very welcome to join us. developer section
